Dark Ballads

"Dark Ballads is based on feelings and atmosphere and, of course, on the interaction of the two ...
Electric guitar and saxophone have been a combination of choice for many duos but here there’s a difference.
The focus is not on the energy of electricity and how it also translates, or moves in a parallel manner, through the gnarls and howls of the saxophone. This is about the ambience, the atmosphere, emotions that are carved out by the two musicians."
Fotis Nikolakopoulos

Lauroshilau

lauroshilau

Founded in 2013, the international trio lauroshilau, exponents of the creative european underground scene, offers an extremely original musical vision, using both the pure research of contemporary music and the new languages of electro- acoustic improvisation. With their long experience, from experimental music to jazz, they build minimal soundscapes, exploring the cracks and sparkles in space and time.

lauroshilau is composing and improvising with textures and structures. Emphasis is on the quality of each sound, merging and blurring the border between electronic and acoustic signals.

Recently they had the opportunity to work on new material in Werkplaats Walter, which resulted in new compositions and a recording that will be released in 2023 on el NEGOCITO records.

After almost 10 years of existence lauroshilau is heading towards a more purified form, where they want to capture the essential inside a composition, while keep on exploring the multiple possibilities in free form improvisation.

La Nuée

La Nuée (The Flock)

A flock is a gathering of gregarious birds, generally made up of the same species, but can also be composed of mixed species. A lot about the behaviour of flocks is still unknown. The formations they fly seem to serve not only as a means of locomotion or protection against predators, but also as a form of expression, an art comparable to music based on a feeling for rhythm and movement. Some suggest, that the birds are keyed up to a state of quickened responsiveness, possessing an extra sense which allows them a kind of telepathic communication. The birds gather to form one whole organism. The character of this new organism is not recognizable in any of the individuals that constitute it, it is a unique character born out of the relations between them. The individuals follow very simple rules, and although there is no centralized control structure dictating how they should behave, local, and to a certain degree random interactions between them lead to the emergence of intelligent global behaviour, unknown to the individuals.

Each bird in the flock, despite his place, can decide a change for the whole formation.

The initial motivation is to bring together a group of musicians that blend into one sound body. One single organism that can move as an entity, breathe, change its form, its density, its maneuvers, its direction, its speed, an entity that can divide itself into subgroups, in individuals and reunite. A body that is more complex than the sum of all its elements. It is the relationship between these elements, their reciprocal influences that give life to the individual character of this new body. This group is concived as a single instrument, from which due to the limited choice of instruments a particular timbre and playing technique arises.

Though La Nuée is esthetically inspired by composers like Helmut Lachenmann, Jürg Frey, Sofia Gubaidulina, György Ligeti and others, our main inspiration is the instrument itself, and it's various possibilities of sound production. We usually start exploring new techniques like multiphonics, quartertones, air-sounds or slaps by group improvisations. Alternating between playing and discussing the outcome, we dive deeper and deeper into the given material. The so found results I then structure into compositions. Depending on the piece, I try to find different ways of framing and communicating the idea of the composition. In some cases it is necessary to write down every single note or sound (like in our quartetone piece “Flottant” or the multiphonic piece “L'Éveil” on our first album), whereas in other cases (“Le Départ”) a graphic or verbal score might be desirable to predefine the overall form, leaving freedom to spontaneous internal interactions between the musicians. Sometimes there are no indications at all of what to play, but instead instructions of how the musicians should interact with one another.

C-IME - Canopée Improvisation Music Ensemble

Ramifications of a dream ecosystem

An inclusive laboratory research on free improvisation

The ensemble is composed of 6 improvising musicians gathered around a desire to experiment the meeting of timbres, voids and fullness that silence draws; meanders traced by the oscillations of listening. Behind the sounds spreads out a labile landscape from which rustling of metal, forested voices or crumbles crashes occasionally escape.

Through a luxuriant instrumentarium - made up of instruments, acoustic, electro-acoustic, invented, diverted objects, electronic devices and voices - these eight women artists are using free improvisation to communicate with their surroundings.

The improvisation, thought of as a porous ecosystem, generates an acute attention to the moment and positions us in the mechanisms and symbioses of the living, in social constructions and communications. The music is based on those systems, goes beyond them, sublimates them. Thanks to its diversity C-IME comes up with innovative sounds, creates new stories thanks to a language of its own.

C-IME has been hosted at CC Brass since 2020 to develop its musical research.
